Aug. 2 - Sketch

With Mayana, I'm attempting yet another tropical scene. This one is probably closer to the work I used to do in Vue than my other matte paintings so it should be a fun challenge. First up, the sketch. Nothing special about this - just a rough sketch made in Photoshop using my wacom tablet to establish the basic colour and composition.

Aug. 22 -The Background

I decided on working on the far away waterfall and the sorrounding cliffs to begin with. I had a couple of ideas I wanted to try. I wanted to make them somewhat more elaborate and intricate than what's hinted at in the sketch. I just love playing with building shapes using light and shadows and this was a great opportunity. This is what I had after a couple of hours work.

Aug. 23 -More cliffs

I've been working some more on the cliffs sorrounding the waterfall and on the vegetation on the slope in the middle of the picture. So far, I like where this is heading. The rocks are working great for the scene. But man, is this going to take a while...!

Aug. 24 - Detail and "Making of..."

I though I wanted to show a close-up of the work I've done so far. Also, I've updated the website and aired my "making of..." I hope you like it so far.

Later...

I've been working on the jungle in front of the waterfall. The palmtrees were rendered in Vue and then assembled, colour corrected, etc. in Photoshop. (see below)

Aug. 26 -Waterfall and jungle and rocks and water and...

Okay, so this time, a lot has happened! I've almost completed practically the entire middle of the image. That part was hard! It's taken a lot of time to get to where I am now, so hopefully the rest wont be as time consuming and challenging. I'll start working on that tuesday. For now, I need a brake :)

Aug. 30 - Finished!

After many hours of working on the foreground jungle, the river, tweaked details all over the image I've finally finished Mayana. Below you see the final image plus a couple of details from a higher resolution. The final image was completed at 4064 x 2019. You can see a larger version in the tropical gallery. I hope you like it and enjoyed this little matte painting diary.
